Michael Schmid is a musician and flutist specializing in contemporary experimental music. A fixed member of the Belgian Ictus Ensemble and as freelancer he has worked with most of the major European New Music Ensembles as chamber musician and soloist.

 

Next to his activity as flutist he appears as performer of concrete poetry, builds sound installations and writes sound pieces. His project BREATHCORE (since 2015) has been an ongoing investigation of the dynamics of breath within a social, artistic and political context. 

 

His latest solo appearances and creations took place at Kunstenfestival des Arts (Brussels) with “Breathcore I” (2016), “Beat fucked Elf” (2016), “Krachal” (2016) at BEAF - Bozar Electronic Arts Festival, Brussels (2017), "Breathcore II" at the Musée Cantonale de Beaux Arts, Lausanne (2019), “Breathcore – Riviera Blues” (2019) in Kaaitheater, “The Pitch” (2020, soundinstallation) in Kammerspiele, Munich.

 

Recent collaborations include projects with choreographers Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker (Rosas), Boris Charmatz, Jerôme Bel, Daniel Linehan; visual artist  Manon de Boer (documenta 13; Wiener Secession); composer Georges Aperghis; designer Brynjar Sigurdarson and the Lafayette Anticipation Foundation (Paris).

 

He is currently working with composer and scenographer Simon Steen-Andersen on a new solo show set to premiere at the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 2026.

 

He has recorded for cyprès, HAT records, cpo, WERGO, Stradivarius, KAIROS and has appeared on television and radio.
